The goal of classroom mentors to reduce failures, reduce D-grades, increase subject competency, increase student confidence and self-motivation, increase comfort in learning.
Oakland Serves works with individual OUSD public high schools to identify required subjects that are hurdles to graduation. We work with the teachers to develop an opportunity schedule for incoming mentors.
Classroom mentors are then matched with a high school classroom based on subject, schedule and location that works for the mentor. Mentors attend one 1.5 hr class period each week. |
Students benefit from mentors for many reason. Lack of foundational knowledge. Slow comprehension of new material. Classroom or personal distractions. Subject anxiety and/or fear of failure.
Mentors work with students within the classroom that need individual support to overcome any or all of those barriers to learning. They may sit with one student for many weeks or different students each week. They may work with the teacher to modify the learning environment or circulate within the classroom. |
