Oakland Serves' mission is helping students that are falling off the graduation track. To do so, we must identify the biggest stumbling blocks. Inability to complete math classes is one of them. Last May we kicked off our “Start Right to End Right” initiative to get more mentors into Algebra 1 and Geometry classes for the 2023-24 school year. We want students to pass the first time around and avoid summer school and remedial classes during the school year. Students must balance these make up classes in addition to regular classes, jobs, and extracurricular activities. Thanks to our experienced math mentors and Calteach college students, we were able to start earlier and provide more continuity throughout the year. Oakland Serves was in over 200 math class sessions throughout the school year! Stay tuned for more reports on our 2023-24 school year accomplishments and impact. Thank you mentors !![]() As the school year comes to an end, we cannot thank our mentors enough, those who assisted in math, English, history, and senior seminars. They're in the classroom weekly, working alongside students to provide encouragement, increase their understanding, and keep them on the road to graduation. This year's 26 mentors were college students, retirees, and working adults, all of whom somehow managed to fit a school visit into their schedule. Not everyone has the time or ability to mentor though. Our donors are the other critical brick in the Oakland Serves organization. Without them, we could not recruit, train, match, and support our in class mentors who are able to volunteer their time. It truly takes a village!
