Dear friends, As we approach the end of 2023, I want to thank the many people and beautiful community spirit that have contributed to Oakland Serves’ mission of raising OUSD’s high school graduation rate. As this is the season of giving, I want to start with our gratitude to all our individual and corporate donors for their generous donations. Without your commitment to increase the educational success of young people in our community, we would not exist. When you give to Oakland Serves, you make a contribution to the future of Oakland. At the heart of our program, we have our mentors. They have worked at five different schools this year to provide weekly support and encourage student success. Though our mentors come from a variety of backgrounds, they all bring a loving spirit when working with students in the classroom. In addition, we have our volunteers, who work behind the scenes giving their technical expertise. Our programs could not run without our small but mighty staff that recruits, prepares, and supports our mentors. I want to thank them for all they do. They share our vision and have contributed much toward improving our support for volunteers. We are also grateful to the school administrators, counselors, and teachers for educating Oakland’s high school students and welcoming us into their classrooms. We would like to especially thank OUSD’s Central Academic Recovery Team Assistant Principal Ms. Gina Hill. Through her programs we have expanded our reach to credit recovery classes, to and summer programs, and connected to other schools. This year we are also thankful to work with the CalTeach program at UC Berkeley which provides STEM college students an opportunity to pursue teaching credentials. Their students have contributed to our support of math classrooms. In addition, the staff of Be A Mentor, Inc. continues to graciously support our volunteer preparation process. Finally, we are grateful for the support of the members of our Board of Directors who help us set policy and contribute to fundraising efforts. Sincerely, Sharon Rose, Oakland Serves CEO and co-founder
