We are excited to again support Oakland Unified School District’s annual summer program for rising 10th and 11th graders: S’HAcK (Summer Healing & Academics 4 Kids). Last year, Oakland Serves provided 16 volunteers who gave over 200 hours of support to the HAcK classrooms.
Students often approach summer school with resentment. They would much prefer to earn money or hang with friends. But summer school is an important option for getting students back on track for graduation before lost credit weighs on them for another year. Each year in high school it becomes harder to re-take classes and the loss starts a domino effect to later classes. In its third year, S’HAcK provides a one month experience of learning (Algebra 1, Biology, English 1, Physical Education) and participation in connected activities led by community partners. This year, S’HAcK will have returning and new community partner projects by Center for Art Esteem, Youth Beat, YR Media, Calculus Roundtable and Niroga Institute. The program is also expanding to two locations this year; S’HAcK East will take place at Youth Uprising, adjacent to Castlemont High School while.S’HAcK West will take place at the Street Academy. Come and join us! Get the schedule here. New volunteer applications for Oakland Serves will be accepted for HAcK though May 8 to allow for clearance and training before summer school start.
